I’ve received numerous requests from people asking to explain what the main ingredients/chemicals used in wine making are and why they’re used.
Here’s a quick video I shot today that will give you some good insight into why we use things like:
- Bentonite
- Potassium Metabisulphite
- Potassium Sorbate
- Isinglass
- Yeast Nutrient
- Pectic Enzyme
- Acid Blend
- Campden Tablets
- Sanitol
So if you’ve always wanted to know what each was used for check out the video below!

Very informative video, nice to see the common wine additives explained like you did.
If you're ever looking for help in calculating additions, I've developed a free online tool for calculating additions to wine and juice, it's http://wineadds.com
Thanks again for the great video!
Have a batch ready to bottle (has been sitting about 6 weeks in carboy). Will it make much difference to let it stand longer before bottling? Room temperature is around 55-60 degrees. (F)
It is a Pinto Noir..
You should be fine Paul – this is what I do …
